Like you said, the recovery partition has been wiped which is why I am trying to use the recovery disks. For the record, I was repairing an HP a730n and was met repeatedly with the error "Cannot recover file" while the initial copy operation was executing from CDs 2 through 8. Thanks for the reply. prob will work out ok anyway. am i happy?

i inserted the disk labeled 1of3, it started working. It's the recovery manager. it says "Use This First!". but at least i got to watch a couple of neat progress bars go by.

In this case I would contact HP and they may send you a new set for nothing.If you burned them your self and you used a generic brand and/or rewritable DVD's think it had a prob with the boot.ini etc.

To give an example of how unstable it is, I went to backup some of my stuff from the old drive after it failed to load Windows and it took me something that would hold the active boot load init.. then maybe might be another 20min re restoring again!! like a power time or something.
